Marathon Aftermath: What Do I Do Now?

I ran my fastest marathon ever, by 42 minutes, on Sunday. By Tuesday I was feeling completely recovered. But I was on a business trip all last week and took the opportunity for a 5 day vacation from running. I have pretty much been running non stop since April of 2010. My last break was the whole winter of 2009-2010. In the last 13 months I have started trail running, ran my 1st 2 trail races, qualified for the Marathon Maniacs, ran 3 marathons, taken 1 hour and 47 minutes off my marathon time, became a coach for Northeast Ohio Fit, started a new job, and had twins. I think the 5 days off from running and getting full nights of sleep was well deserved. Plus, I didn’t even feel guilty for missing my runs this time.

So after all of this, what do I do now? I keep running, it is such an important, therapeutic and enjoyed part of my life. But, I am not scheduling any major races till the Muddy Paws 10 mile trail race on July 23 in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I going to take this time out from racing to not only run, but get serious in cross training. With the chaos of my life over the last year, cross training is where I am serious lacking. I have done zero! As I think about last week’s race, I have to question if that was the reason why I missed my sub 4 hour goal. I’ll never know for sure, but it is a good possibility.

So how do I fit cross training in my crazy schedule. I have to admit that I have a gym membership that currently never gets touched. Until the twins get a little older and require a little less maintenance, it will unfortunately stay that way. So I have to look at where I can fit in other methods of cross training.

First, I’m in the process of buying my first real road bike. You may ask how will I have time to fit bike riding into my schedule. I’m going to fit it where I currently use my car. To go to work, run nearby errands and to go the park to run. And with gas prices as high as they are, I will have more money to spend on diapers and formula.

But this will still leave me still no core or upper body cross training. I think I have found a low time involvement way to do this too. I am going to turn to something that as a MAN I never thought I would do. I’m going to use some of my wife’s exercise videos at home. I can’t believe I am admitting this to other people. Don’t judge me, I have twins. I have two videos of hers that I’m considering doing. One is Jillian Michaels’ 6 Week 6 Pack and the other is her 30 Day Shred. Both look like solid workouts that integrate a few different versions of the workouts and are less than 30 minutes long. An added advantage, I won’t even have to leave the house. Perfect in case any of those oh so common kiddo emergencies come up.
